Career Experience

Career Experience is non-paid work experience.


  • 16 years old
  • Independent self-care skills
  • Consistently maintains self-control
  • Demonstrates appropriate behavior
  • Accident insurance required
  • Completed the employability course
  • Transitional IEP

Career Experiences is an Exceptional Student Educational course in which the student receives work based learning on or off campus to teach and evaluate employability skills and prepare the student for the transition from school to work.

Transportation & Duration:

  • Bus transportation is provided by School Board to and from job site
  • Implemented 5 days a week
  • 3 to 3 1/2 hours a day

There is a Polk County School Board employee at each work based learning site who supervises and evaluates the students in Career Experiences.

The Transitional Specialist for the Northwest Area of Polk County is Sandy Perlewitz and is located at Doris Sanders Learning Center. The schools in this area include Kathleen High, Lake Gibson High and Doris Sanders Learning Center.

Job sites are located at Publix, Lakeland Regional Medical Center, The Lakeland Center, Blake Elementary, Hollis Gardens, and Lake Parker Park. Students learn from actual hands on experience in a variety of settings, such as in a laundry facility, a cafeteria including (fast foods, bakery, serving or simple cleaning), maintenance and many others. Also appropriate social skills training is taught daily.

Career Placement

Career Placement is paid work experience.


  • Find and maintain approved competitive employment

  • Provide own transportation
  • Accident insurance required

The Career Placement Program is flexible in order to meet the student’s scheduling needs, both at school and on the job. The student may earn high school credit for up to six class periods per day.
